The name of the game for my preschool students is fun! Students at this age learn by playing and exploring. We improvise at every lesson, play listening games and use fun toys and props to introduce little ones to the grand world of music.
At a preschooler’s piano lesson, we might improvise a thunderstorm, build a keyboard (recognizing the patterns of the black keys), and learn how to play “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” by rote. I always keep it light and allow the student’s interests to lead my instruction.
My goals for preschoolers by the time they enter Kindergarten:
enjoy making music at the piano
play at least 5 songs by memory
know the music alphabet and be able to name all of the white piano keys
tap quarter note, eighth note, and half note rhythms
know all of the finger numbers and begin to read music using finger numbers
My students inspire me to be the best teacher I can be!
Piano for kids (ages 6+)
Kids this age get to delve deep into their exploration of the world of piano music! Beginners start to train their ear at the very first lesson by learning to play by rote. Then, they gradually learn how to read music one interval at a time and at a pace that is never overwhelming. Students are introduced to all kinds of music: pop, classical, contemporary, jazz, and blues. In addition to learning pieces in the Piano Safari method books, kids get to choose to learn whatever they are interested in – Disney, pop, contemporary – and will learn the basics of reading a lead sheet. And, to top it all off, we play music games at every lesson!
At a beginner’s piano lesson, we might learn “I Like Bananas“ by rote, improvise a happy/sad duet on the black keys, and play the sticky ball animal rhythm game.
A lesson for an intermediate student might include a blues scale improvisation, learning a favorite Disney song and playing the note naming race game.
Teens might participate in the 40 piece challenge, learn a favorite pop song from a lead sheet and play the key signature memory game.
